FAQs
Q: Can I still work with my therapist if I move out of state?
We would love to work with our clients for as long as they need us; however, therapists are only able to see clients in the states in which they're licensed. Currently for Autonomy Therapy clinicians that's Texas, so we are only able to see clients who reside in Texas.

Q: I want to start therapy for anxiety, but I'm anxious to even have a call. Can I schedule a session without having a phone call first?
Yes! If you'd like to schedule virtually please head over to AutonomyTherapyATX.com/send-a-message-austin-tx to fill out our inquiry form. Specify that you want to schedule your initial session virtually, and a member of our admin team will be in touch to schedule you via email. Easy!

Q: What if I can't get my family to come in for family therapy?
We recognize that getting multiple people in the same space to do vulnerable work can be very challenging. Our therapists offer free 15-minute consultations prior to scheduling an initial appointment to assure goodness of fit and to answer any questions you and your family may have about attending therapy. Should family members refuse to join sessions, we welcome you, as an individual, to do work that you will find empowering, and help you to connect more deeply to yourself regardless of who else is in the room.

Q: How long is a therapy session?
Our standard therapy sessions are 50 minutes. Please connect with your individual provider should you have specific requests regarding additional time.

Q: I think my child has an eating disorder. Should I wait until my child finishes their school semester before scheduling them with a therapist?
If you think your child has an eating disorder, the sooner you can get them support, the better. Our therapists specialize in working with eating disorders, body image issues, compulsive exercise, and trauma. They're able to see clients virtually or in person, and several have after-school spots to accommodate either lunchtime or after-school appointments.

Q: Do you offer educational events for the public?
Yes! You can sign up for our monthly newsletter right on our website to stay in the loop about upcoming local and virtual education opportunities. We've collaborated with a book store in Georgetown to provide education on attachment theory using fantasy characters from a popular book series, spoke to corporate groups about eating disorder awareness for NEDA Week, and partnered with Fleet Feet most recently to help runners gain education about intuitive movement - just to name a few! We love being out and connecting with the community. If you have a suggested topic for an upcoming event, please let us know!

Q: Can your clinicians work with clients who have multiple diagnoses? For example if someone is bipolar and also has an eating disorder, can you help?
Yes, definitely. Our clinicians work with clients who have a wide range of presenting diagnoses. To do this most effectively, we are committed to connecting with clients' additional providers, such as a nurse practitioner and/or a psychiatrist to offer the most holistic and supportive care possible.

Q: Can you provide references or testimonials from previous clients?
As our clients' privacy is protected under HIPAA laws we are not able to provide any reference or testimonials from previous clients.

Q: Can my therapist talk to my other providers?
Absolutely, in fact we encourage it! Please let your therapist know if you have additional providers (such as a PCP, Registered Dietitian, Nurse Practitioner) and we will send you a form called a "Release of Information" to complete. That will allow us to speak with them on your behalf to coordinate care.

Q: Will you work with clients that don't have eating disorders?
Yes! While our clinicians have an added specialization of being able to work with and treat eating disorders, they can also work with a range of other presenting issues. These include, but are not limited to anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, family conflict, life transitions, grief and low self-esteem.

As a registered dietitian specializing in disordered eating, I wholeheartedly endorse Autonomy therapy based on their track record of compassionate care with my clients. ED informed therapists are often tough to come by, but I know that any Autonomy therapist who sees my clients will be able to speak to these specialized concerns from an informed, educated, and experienced place, and I rest easier knowing my clients will receive positive and appropriate messaging about their relationship with food and their body. I cannot speak highly enough of the leadership. Collaborating with Kim on clients and various presentations has taught me so much, and made me a better provider.

As a professional colleague of Kim's, I trust her and her clinical team to provide only the best quality care to their clients. Kim is a highly respected speaker and mental-health clinician in our community. She brings her expertise and passion for helping others grow and move forward on their healing journey to both her clients and her colleagues. I highly recommend Kim and her team at Autonomy Therapy for mental health treatment!

The previous reviews here speak for themselves - Autonomy Therapy is comprised of many compassionate, competent, dedicated, and sensitive providers, all of whom are guided and supported tirelessly (and seemingly effortlessly!) by owner Kim Fry. As a fellow therapist, I don't think twice about referring to this practice and I can always trust that potential clients will find themselves in good - and safe - hands. It can be difficult to identify trusted referral sources, especially ones that are truly eating disorder-competent and weight inclusive, so Autonomy is truly a gift.

I have been a professional and shared clients with several therapists at Autonomy Therapy. My clients have wonderful feedback about their experiences. As a professional, the ease of collaboration is essential to being a holistic provider who values the whole person in terms of health. The administration staff is on top of communication and their space is generously comfortable and welcoming. Thank you Kim and Autonomy Therapy for your dedication and professionalism.

As someone with a sensitive history with therapy, I am so grateful to have found a place that not only prioritizes my mental health, but follows ethical guidelines and respects my boundaries and confidentiality. I highly recommend coming here, especially if you are dealing with body image issues, anxiety and depression. I have found my experience with all staff at Autonomy to be empathetic and creates a safe, non-judgmental environment where I feel comfortable sharing my thoughts and emotions.
